Too many of us stick with the same mattress for years on end. Many people don’t realise that sleeping on the same mattress year after year can actually have a substantial impact on their health and wellbeing. If you’re wondering when is the right time to hit the shops in the hunt for a new mattress for your home, this list is for you. If you tick any of these boxes, it’s time to make a change.


  1. You wake up feeling exhausted. Sleeping at night should be a restorative experience. Unless you have a specific illness that causes this problem, waking in the morning shouldn’t feel like an insurmountable chore. If each morning is a huge struggle and you find yourself feeling sluggish and sleepy all day, that’s a good sign that your bed just isn’t doing its job. Listen to your body and buy queen mattress that feels comfortable against your body and allows you to get a proper night’s sleep, rather than a night spent tossing and turning.
  2. You’d rather sleep in the spare room. Some people find that as they grow older or face particular health problems, they seek out a bed or sofa in another room of the house in an attempt to get a better night’s sleep. Your mattress should be comfortable enough that you can sleep well in your own bedroom, not moving around the house in the hunt for some decent shut-eye. There’s no specific deadline on a mattress, but many experts suggest that you shouldn’t use the same mattress for more than around 7-10 years. If you’re hitting that mark then that’s a great reason to find a good replacement. For those of you that are sleeping on hand-me-down mattresses with no idea when it was purchased, it’s often best to assume that it’s long past that use-by date.
  4. There are sagging areas of the mattress. When you lie in bed at night, you shouldn’t find yourself sinking into a hole in your bed. Sagging spots in your mattress are a bad sign – they mean that the springs have lost their original resiliency and are breaking down. Impressions in the mattress can also become permanently indented after you’ve slept on it for many years. If a memory foam mattress begins to sag then the core may be softening, which means it’s time to get a replacement.
  5. Your weight has changed substantially. This may sound odd, but it’s a reality for many people. If you were many kilograms lighter when you first bought your mattress then it won’t be offering the same level of support to your body that it was at the time of purchase. The same goes for those that have lost a significant amount of weight. As the size and shape of your body changes, so do your requirements for your bed. Make sure your mattress has the right level of support and firmness for your current body weight so you can sleep comfortably.
